Katie Bardes

Hello I’m Katie, I am a counsellor, psychotherapist, coach and trainer.

When we meet, I will listen and ask questions to explore what brings you to counselling or psychotherapy, and what you want to develop for yourself.  I see you as an individual with your own unique set of experiences and life history that informs how you relate to yourself and to others.  I will be curious about you and your life and will want to build a way of working together based on trust and respect.   It may be that you have a particular issue, problem, behaviour or goal that you wish to work on – or perhaps you’re experiencing a more general sense of anxiety, depression or burnout.  Whatever it is that brings you to this work, we will work in a way that is inclusive of all aspects of your experience.

I trained at Spectrum, a leading organisation in the practice and development of Humanistic psychotherapy based in London.  Humanistic psychotherapy is client-centred and recognises the relationship between therapist and client as significant in creating conditions for growth.   For me, counselling and psychotherapy is a process grounded in compassion and curiosity, which supports each of us in growing a stronger sense of self and learning ways of actively participating in our own developmental process.  When I work with you, I am interested in how you respond to the current challenges that you face in your life.  I will also be curious to explore how your past experiences have been formative in how you now relate to yourself and to others.  I believe that we all form habitual ‘default’ patterns of behaviour that manifest through our thoughts and beliefs, our emotions and our embodied response.  Growing our awareness of these patterns of response gives us the possibility to learn what these patterns teach us about who we are, what we need and how we can support ourselves going forward.

Background

I am originally from London and have lived and worked in Cambridge since 2001. I am married and have two children and my therapeutic work is informed by my own experience of the joys and challenges of family life.

I have worked as an associate counsellor with Cambridge Counselling Service, and as a counsellor at Lawrence Way Community Counselling Service, an NHS funded service based in Cambridge.  I also work as a counsellor and psychotherapist in private practice.

In addition to my work as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I work as a trainer and coach within multi-cultural organisations in the corporate, public, educational and not-for-profit sectors. Developing skills to communicate effectively and build relationships has been an important thread connecting my different areas of experience
